Under Stress. Irregular Heart Beat. Does It Need To Be Checked?

I've been under real stress lately. My wife ran off with my kid back to florida a few months ago. Here in past few weeks when I sit down my heart rate will start goin crazy. It was so fast I almost called 911 several times. No real pain. I was told by someone to stick my face in really cold water. That does seem to bring it back down a good bit but it will shoot up 2 or 3 more times before it settles down. This usually last for a couple of hours then it all settles down. I have been drinkin a lot of slimfast type drinks lately and I heard that the aspartame in those things can make u have high heart rate. Since I got off of those I have notice its not as bad and can seem to keep my pulse down a lot more. I have always had a slowrate. Cardio doc check me several years ago and said my heart was great I just had slow beat and not worry. So u see why I'm nervous about this fast rate. I'm 41 and overall good shape. So I go back to doc and have it checked out?

Dear Sir
Thanks for your query.
1. Although your heart rate is better controlled now, but as per your description, what was the abnormal rhythm troubling you is not clear? We must have a definite diagnosis of the rhythm disorder, its cause and only the treatment and prognosis and future strategy can be decided. Since it is not known, you should see your doctor.
If it is still irregular but slower or If episodes of high heart rate still occurring you must undergo evaluation.
Higher heart rates are known too occur with tea/coffee/ smoking/ alcohol/ anti-asthma drugs/ anti-cold medicines, thyroid disorders etc.
Sincerely
Sukhvinder
