Uncontrolled sugar levels, loose stools. Are these related?

My wife has type 2 diabetes and has had a period of several days when the glucose levels were high and hard to control. This is now back to normal, but she now has very loose and watery stools . Can this be related to glucose levels readjusting? She has had this same situation in the past. YYYY@YYYY Thanks

Thanks for posting your query.
Although infections are very common in a diabetic patient but gastroenteritis is generally not a common presentation.
Diarrhea may be due to diabetic medicine such as metformin.
Does she has constipation in the past?
Because of overgrowth of bacteria in small intestine, constipated patient may develop diarrhea later on.
She should consult with internal medicine specialist and take complete antibiotic course.
She should also maintain her hydration by potassium rich fluids.
Take care,

Welcome to HCM
Your wife is sufferibg from Diabetes Type II uncontrolled , as you say now it is normal blood sugar level
But her watery loose motion problem may be unrelated to diabetes so it is possible she has Gastroenteritis which should be treated with correction of dehydration and investigate the cause after cosulting your treating Physician get Stool R&M,Creatinine level and Electrolytes.
Take care or potable water, also check with your Physician if you are taking drugs any one which can cause loose motion.
If infection is there easily trated with prescription medicines, but if her diabetes is longstanding and if possibly she has autonomic neuropathy it may be trouble some ??
Just take care of her blood sugar level .
I hope nothing serious is there and she should improve in few days.
Good Luck.

Hello and welcome to Healthcare Magic. Thanks for your query.

The loose stools are unlikely to be because of the readjusting of the sugar levels. It could be possible that a dietary change or an infection or food poisoning could have resulted in the loose stools.

I would suggest that she takes plenty of fluids and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS, e.g. Electral) for the loose stools. It is also important to take nutritious and fibre-rich food like green leaves and green vegetables.

Best wishes,
Dr. Sheeba Stephen
