Ulcers On Feet, Calves, Pain All Over Body. Is There Anything Effective To Treat His Symptoms?

Hi, my boyfriend has a diagnosis of thalassaemia minor, although has not seen a medical professional with regards to it in a few years. He s developing ulcers on his feet (mainly between his toes) and on his calves. He s in pain a lot of the time (currently using tramadol for it, which is the only thing that has an effect) and the pain is all over his body. He has agreed to see a GP initially but I d like to give him some reassurance as to treatment. Is there anything effective to treat his symptoms with at the moment?

Dear friend, welcome to Healthcaremagic!
I am Dr. Prasad Akole (Critical Care Expert- http://bit.ly/Dr-Prasad-Akole) and am glad to address to your query here.

Leg ulcers are common in thalassemia major.
He may not have been evaluated in depth of late.
I would advise him to be evaluated thoroughly so that treatment can be planned. There may be variations or rare types of thalassemia which need consideration. Blood transfusion is the mainstay of traetment if one has thal major.

Untreated complications may increase.

Tramadol/ paracetamol combinations may help ease pain. But the disorder should be evaluated and treated. NO shortcuts to it.

Please convince him because good treatment improves outcomes and quality of life.

I hope to have answered your query satisfactorily. I would be glad to answer any further queries. Take care and please keep me informed of your progress at http://bit.ly/Dr-Prasad-Akole
