Trouble With Vision. Advised Cataracts In Both Eyes And Surgery After 6 Months. History Of Three Corneal Graftings In Eyes. Chances Of Normal Vision After Surgery?

hi, i have a question regarding eye cataracts....My dad has had three corneal graftings done on his right eye and one on his left one...recently he had trouble with his vision..the doctors say he has cataracts in both his eyes and he should wait 6 months for it to 'ripen'' and then go for surgery...what are the chances of his vision coming back to normal after cataract surgery, as he has had corneal grafting done? is there a chance that he may not get his vision back? please help

hello,
welcome to HCM
your father will gain vision that was present to him before having cataract.
now a days ripening of cataract and then operate is not done.if he is having decrease vision due to cataract and problem in daily activity, he can undergo cataract operation.
why he had undergone corneal grafting?
if graft is clear and quality of graft is good and fundus i.e. retina is normal he will restore good vision after surgery.
i request you to visit ophthalmologist and if every thing normal like graft clarity, he can undergo surgery.
take care.i hope i answered your query

Hi..
Welcome to HCM and thanks for the query..
When was the last corneal graft done in both eyes and for what reason was it done?
Is your dad a diabetic or having any other systemic problems?
Visual prognosis depends the first diagnosis for which the corneal surgery was done and the status of the graft in both eyes.
Also the type of the cataract matters.. whether it is age related senile cataract or complicated or traumatic..
Overall the visual prognosis is definitely guarded (especially in right eye because of repeated grafts). Vision may not be totally normal because the cataract is not the only cause of decreased vision..
In such cases cataract surgery should be performed only if it is really indicated and the patient's day to day activities (routine) are getting affected..That's why your doctor has not advised immediate surgery..
Don't worry discuss in detail everything with your treating doctor and take decision accordingly..
Hope I helped with my answer...Take care..

Hello,
It seems from the history that your dad had corneal grafting in both the eyes and now he has developed cataract.
Now the treatment required is cataract surgery depending on the maturity of the cataract. Chances of vision improvement after normal cataract surgery are almost 100 % but in the case of your dad since he had already undergone corneal grafting he will have astigmatism induced by corneal grafting. The final vision depends on the amount of astigmatism. The other complications which have to be kept in mind are graft failure and graft rejection which can be precipitated by cataract surgery. Hence cataract surgery in case of corneal grafting has to be done taking precautions to prevent these complications.

Thank you
