Triglyceride Level On Higher End(499). Prescribed Gemfibrozil. How Fast Can This Be Cured?

I have high triglycerides. 499 last time I had a test. My doctor put me on gemfibrozil. How long does it take for the medication to have an affect and lower my numbers? The reason I am in such a hurry is due to my career. I am required to get other blood work completed every couple of years but because my numbers are so high the blood can not be tested and I may lose my job

Hi,
Thanks for using Healthcaremagic,

You have high Triglyceride level desirable level is less than 150 mg% we also check for cholesterol, HDL and LDL level to treat lipid abnormality.
If it is isolated high triglyceride level commonly due to Obesity, high carbohydrate diet, Diabetes, pre diabetes, Alcohol intake, renal failure& Hypothyroidism.
We need to know the cause to treat it.

Mild to moderately high levels of triglycerides lifestyle changes are recommended.

This may include restriction of carbohydrates and fat in the diet.
If you are overweight please lose those extra kgs.
Medications are recommended in those with high levels of triglycerides, with fibrates being recommended specially if pancreatic disease is there.

Take care of diet and medicine repeat test after 1 month it will take 2-3 months to reach goal.

Hope this helps.

Good Luck
