Took Compazine, Phenergan, Zofran For Persistent Nausea After Having Fundoplication. Any Suggestion?

I am a 57 year old female and had fundoplication in July, 2013. I have had persistent nausea and dry heaving since then. Is it possible the vagal nerve was damaged in some manner? This is affecting my diet, work life, social life, and waking me up at night . . . so also it affects my sleep. Will the vagal nerve repair itself? I have taken Compazine, Phenergan, and Zofran and this did not help me at all. Thank you so much.

Hi,
Welcome to HCM,
These are common symptoms after Fundoplication. I hope before operation, you had undergone proper understanding of the procedure, benefits and possibilities of complications . usually it takes 3-6 months to resolve these symptoms. During this recovery time, we give diet advise and medical treatment. Instead of above medications, you should have taken some prokinetic medicines, like Domperidone, cisapride etc, and Simethicon. Phenargan and Zofran can suppress respiratory centre, and could be the cause of Heaving. You must eat slowly, small and frequent meals, avoid blended, gas producing or fizzy drinks. Avoid drinking water and any cold drink while having meal. Avoid smoking and Alcohol. Reduce weight and do walk after every meal for 10 minutes. reason could be injury to vagus nerve, and for that you may need to go for revision surgery. There are several other causes aslo for these symptoms. I would say, just take good care of your diet, life style, avoid mental stress, and give another few months. You must consult your Doctor also. In few cases, there may be need for another surgery for fundoplication, which has to be considered after proper counseling and proper justification for the surgery.
Best wishes.
