Toddler Suffering With Throat Infection And Fever, Difficulty In Swallowing. Medicines?

Hi Doc, My daughter of 1.5yr weighing 12kg is suffering from throat infection and mild fever since Saturday morning. She is on Sunday, unable to swallow anything including water and mother s milk which she is otherwise fond of. Please suggest the safe medicine we can give her so as to ease her pain and then show to a nearby physician Mon evening if required. YYYY@YYYY

Pediatrician, Critical Care 's  Response
Dear Mr Mathur

From the description given, if your daughter is unable to swallow anything including water -- She needs to be seen by a Pediatrician sooner.

Even if I recommend some medicines and she is unable to swallow, medicines won't work.

I would try following medicines in the interim before she gets seen by a Pediatrician:

Syr Calpol (250 mg/5ml) 4 ml, max 4 times a day

Maintain adequate intake of liquids to prevent dehydration (give 2-3 spoons at a time, and repeat every 10-15 minutes)

Hope you are able to see a Pediatrician very soon and wish her speedy recovery

Regards

Dr Tejas Shah
