Thyroid Removed After Graves Disease Diagnosis By Nuclear Medicine. Taking Thyroxine And Duromine. Should My Appetite Be Under Control?

I have Graves disease and had my thyroid removed by Nuclear Medicine 2 years ago. The medical team decided to wait 6 months before putting me on Thyroxin. In that time I gained an incredible 25 kilos. It has been extremely difficult to lose the weight, although I lead an active healthy lifestyle. Short of starving myself, is the only way. I know this as this year I resorted to an intragastric balloom and lost 23 kilos. It was not a healthy way to lose the weight as I was literally starving by the end of the 5th month and had to have it taken out before the 6mth time frame. It has been 5 mths since and I am slowly regaining the weight, up to 7 kilos now. I exercise 2 hours daily by, running and walking, resistance training and vibratraining. I used to own a gym and now what is required. I am considering Duromine and wonder is this is possible while being on 100mg of Thyroxin. The only reason I am considering this is that you begin to feel like a failure, yet you are trying everything. To do what I did re the balloon was extreme for me, however I could not see a light at the end of the tunnel. I am thinking if I could just suppress the appetite enough to maintain my current weight, I would be both mentally and physically healthier. I am 47, weight 79kgs, height 5ft 7. Have averaged between 64 and 69kilos since all of my children have been born, until being diagnosed, where my weight was up too 95kilos! Please advise....

hi there

first and foremost
please do not be too concious of your weight
god makes people and he gives them problems
so please dont be too low on feelings
there is nothing to feel like a failure just because you are overweight

second, about duromine
please have a look at its conditions where it should be not used
one says hyperthyroidism
graves disease is a form of hyperthyroidism
and besides the side effect profile is not at all safe

third
now that you have had thyroidectomy
you have hypothyroidism
thyroid hormones are very important for metabolism
i am guessing you were normal to underweight before
and this was likely to be a result of your thyroid hormones
post op, now that you need thyroid hormone replacement,
please wait till your ideal dose of thyroid hormone requirement is reached
you are still taking 100mcg of thyroid hormone tabs
at 80 kgs, i suspect your ideal dose should be around 150 mcg plus

i would therefore suggest you get your thyroid profile
if your tsh remains high, you need to escalate the dose further
once your ideal dose of thyroxine is achieved, you are likely to get your normal weight again
or at least it will respond to everything you do to control it

best of luck
