Taking Synthroid For Hypothyroidism During Pregnancy. Is Having Acebutolol Safe For Inappropriate Sinus Tachycardia?
Hi,
I am 26 yrs old and am around 9 weeks pregnant. Last year after being started on Synthroid for hypothyroidism I began having tachycardia and was diagnosed with inappropriate sinus tachycardia. My HR would go up 140-160 with minimal exertion. I was put on Atenolol 25mg and it has more or less controlled it. I saw my cardiologist today and although he knows that Atenolol is bad for pregnant women he didn't know what I should take to control my heart rate. My blood pressure typically runs 110/70. I ended up looking on line while I was with him and we found Acebutolol which he ordered for me to take. The dose will be 200mg BID PRN. Is this something that will help my heart rate without lowering my blood pressure too much. I want to know if this should be safe for me since the doctor really didn't know. I plan on asking my OB when I see her next week but I may have to take the Acebutolol before then. Thank you.

I read your query and would like to say that:
The use of beta blockers isn't recommended during pregnancy, especially during the third trimester. This is due to worsening of child apnea during birth.
However the use of betablockers during the first and second trimester isn't absolutely contraindicated to control tachy-arrhythmia.
Also in the third trimester the use of beta blockers may be permited under strict medical supervision to control hemodinamically instable tachycardia.
So I strongly suggest consulting a cardiologist and together with your obstetrician let them choose, what the best is for you and your baby.
