Taking Lisinopril, Simvastatin And Vistaril. Tired And Dehydrated. Blood Work Done. Advised To Take More Liquid Food

My boyfriend is taking lisinopril 20mg one a day, Simvastatin 40mg one a day, vistaril 25mg, quetiapine fumarate 25mg one or two as needed two times a day, and lithium carbonate 300mg 2 at bedtime on in a.m. He is feeling VERY weak and tired and staying VERY hateful to everyone around him. His energy levels are very low and he is also staying dehydrated and everything tastes bad to the point where he won t eat or hardly drink. He had blood work done to monitor his lithium levels and was told it was in critical range to drink more liquids and retest Monday. What can be done? I fear it s the Lisinopril interacting with the lithium but he needs it otherwise his blood pressure goes up or without the lithium his mood swings are completely unbearable... What can be done that we can suggest to his physician to switch him to?

Hi,

Dehydration can dangerously increase serum lithium levels and can cause lithium toxicity. So people on lithium must avoid dehydration at all costs. You are also right in saying that lisinopril can increase serum lithium levels. In my view since lithium dose not have too many alternatives while lisinopril has, it will be better to substitute lisinopril with another antihypertensive. Amlodipine will be a good option. He may also need a decrease in the dose of lithium that he is taking. Please ensure that he takes lots of fluids and dehydration is corrected.

Hope this helps you. Best wishes.
