Taking Birth Control Pills For Seizures But No Relief. Any Suggestions?

Hi, my daughter is 21yrs old and have had seizures since she was nine months old. For the most part they were under control until she turned 18 and every month she would have seizures. They seem to happen at least 1 to 2 weeks before her menstral. This is something that has been monitored for about 4 to 5 months before the doctor figured she was having premenstral seizue. She has been to a endocronologist which prescribed a hormone pill . we tried that for a while which didn t seem to work. Then they put her on birth control to level her hormones which still seem not to work. She is on several seizure meds and still she continue every month to have them. Do you have any suggerstions.

Neurologist 's  Response
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

It is unfortunate that your daughter's seizures are not under control.

First of all, we need to determine the exact cause. In this regard, MRI brain epilepsy protocol is important. Also, we need to find out the type of seizures, for this, EEG is useful.

Then, we need to decide the correct anti epileptic medications at the correct dose for controlling her seizures.

In some cases, epilepsy surgery may be required, if the epilepsy is found to be medically refractory.

Please consult a neurologist of epilepsy specialist for further evaluation and treatment.

Best wishes,
