Tail Bone Pain. Taking Lorazepam . Abdominal Hysterectomy Done. Suggestion?

Hi, I had an abdominal hysterectomy 6.5 months ago. Following surgery I experienced agonizing muscle constriction and unbearable burning pain in my buttocks, hips, legs and lower back for several months. Thanks be to God the muscle constriction and burning pain has mostly gone. Rather than returning to a job I love four to six weeks post-op, I returned PART-TIME five months post-op, on doctor's orders. What I'm still dealing with is an extremely painful tailbone, almost near constant pain except for when I take Lorazepam which interestingly has been the only medication throughout this entire ordeal that has brought me relief. Muscle relaxants, Tylenol 3 and anti-inflammatory's haven't helped at all. The tailbone pain sometimes feels like a throbbing pain, sometimes it feels like a burning pain. I am afraid that it won't go away. My doc doesn't know what to do with me, though she has referred me to a pain clinic - I am on the waiting list for Toronto Western pain clinic. The intensity with which the pain hits my tailbone is absolutely insane. I am speaking with a trauma therapist (trauma from the surgery) and she believes the pain is psychological, though it manifests physically. Can you guide me well? I don't want to try oxycodone (which I have) until the pain specialist says to do so because I am concerned about getting hooked. I already know I do not get hooked to Lorazepam. Please help.

Hi there ~

I understand your concerns and am happy for you for having had the surgery with almost no complications. However this issue with the pain in your tailbone is very concerning and it is interesting to note that you are helped only with Lorazepam. I wonder what dose of the medication you are on and how many times you take it per day. It usually is the case that you might get habituated to this medication as well. I believe that your pain might be more easily treated with muscle relaxants like baclofen or chlorzoxazone and neuropathic pain relievers like gabapentin and pregabalin might be helpful. Please consult your doctor for the same. I would also advise you against using oxycodone.

I hope this helps. Take care and have a lovely day!
