Swollen Throat, Pain In Ears. Pain While Chewing. Blood Tests Normal. Is It Barotitis?

i had a sore throat , ear pain and a sharp pain at the top of my head about a month ago and the pain went away in about 5 days after i took amoxicillan for a couple of days.. then the sore throat came back after a week and it felt swollen on the left side of my throat and the lymph node on under the left side of my jaw felt swollen also then the swelling went down but the pain went towards my ear and TMJ( my jaw joint) and it reaches all the way up by my temple. It feels like my ear and jaw joint are swollen and I feel the pain when I chew or clinch my jaw. I went to the emergency room and they said that I didn t have strep throat and the doctor thinks I have Barotitis Media and Pharyngitis and tonsillitis . they did regular blood work and everything came back normal and they did Blood culture and im waiting untill they get the results. please let me know what you think. thanks

Hi. The infection has spread from the tonsil to other nearby area, thereby causing the present problem. The TMJ pain can be felt in nearby area too. You have to continue with the medicines your Doctor has advised and this time complete the course say for a few weeks till the infection is cured. This is the only way to avoid recurrence.

ENT Specialist Dr. A.K. Srivastava's  Response
Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding swollen throat , pain in ear.

After considering all aspects of your symptoms and their co relation it appears as most likely you are suffering from upper respiratory tract infection with eustachian tube dysfunction.

In your case infection from throat reaches middle ear through eustachian tube and gives feeling of blockade in ear and pain. Whenever we swallow any thing the pharyngeal end of eustachian tube gets open for ventilating or maintaining air pressure in middle ear, since your throat is infected therefore this eustachian opening becomes painful on swallowing .

To treat it you should take-

1- Antibiotics (preferably broad spectrum)

2- Tab Paracetamol.

3- Anti histaminic.

4- Steam inhalation.

5- Decongestant.

I hope this will help you.

Regards.
