Swelling After Got Hit On Face. Hurts On Applying Pressure. Medical Check Up Required?
I got hit on the left side of my face where my jaw meets right next to my ear, it's been 4 going on to 5 days now and the swelling has gone down after the first 2 days but seems to stay the same size now and hurts we I apply a little pressure. How long should I wait to see a doctor and is there any problems that I should be concerened about? Also how long do you think till this swelling will go away?
Hi, A blow to this area of the face has probably affected the temporomandibular joint. This is where the jaw hinges to open and close. This is not likely to be serious and should recover over the next 2-3 days but may possibly take a week. In the meantime, take paracetamol and ibuprofen for the pain. Also hot or cold compresses may help. Eat soft foods if it hurts to eat. Try not to open your jaw widely until the discomfort has settled. If your symptoms have not improved in a week, consider seeing your doctor. However, I am fairly sure the problem will have resolved by then. Regards, Dr K A Pottinger, MBChB FRCA
