Swelling Above Eyebrow After Stitches For Head Injury. Is This Serious?

My 21 year old son was playing football yesterday and hit his head on a tree branch. As a result he required three stitches approx. 1cm above his eyebrow. Also he developed a huge goose egg above his eye rove. This swelling has now traveled to his eye and has almost shut it and the swelling is spreading above his other eyebrow and below. Is this a serious concern or is this just normal. Please respond. Lou

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello Lou,

The swelling is due to accumulation of fluid/ blood (hematoma) secondary to the injury.
This is a normal physiological mechanism of the body in response to any inflammatory process.
Eyelids being located in a dependent part, the fluid has trickled down, resulting in the swelling.

Symptomatic relief can be obtained with:
1. Ice application
2. Analgesics like diclofenac with serratiopeptidase preparation for reduction of swelling
3. Antibiotics for protection against secondary bacterial infection
4. Multivitamins & multimineral preparations to assist in wound healing.

There is no need to worry, your son will be fine.
However, if the swelling persists or associated with other complaints like fever, dizziness, vomiting, convulsions, etc. then you need to consult the treating Physician to rule out any intra-cranial injury.

Wishing him a speedy recovery.
Take care.
