Swallowing Accidentally Causes Coughing, Feels As Throat Closes And Cant Breath. Reason?

if I accidentally swallow incorrectly and start coughing I feel as though my throat closes and I cant breath. it seems as though it has gotten worse from the first time and I get really scared that I'm not going to get my breath back in time . I actually gasp for air . Can you explain this and what I should do. is this something I should look into with my GP?

ENT Specialist 's  Response
The cause can be a neuromuscular muscular incoordination at the level of palate and laryngeal inlet which can happen with increasing age and has been observed more commonly in diabetics. You should eat or drink slowly without talking in between and semisolid will be more easy to swallow than liquids. In case problem increases, do get a neurological examination done. Regards
