Swallowed Cough Medicine Down Window Pipe, Irritation, Feeling Urge To Cough. Any Long Term Affects From This?

It doesn't get any more ironic than this . . . I swallowed cough medicine down the wrong pipe. Couldn't get air for a couple seconds . . . maybe 3 or 4 seconds. Then had coughing fit for a good 20 minutes or so. Urge to cough not nearly as bad as it was at first. Breathing is fine. But windpipe feels "irritated" mostly so still having some urge to cough. Would there be any long term affects from this? I'm thinking syrup in the lungs isn't a good thing!

Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding swallowing cough medicine in windpipe which results in vigrous cough for about 20 minutes.

Here I would like to tell you that if swallowed fluid enters in windpipe this indicates -

(a) Pharyngeal palsy or Laryngeal palsy.

(b) Obstructive lesion in food pipe (esophagus).

(c) Tracheo-esophageal fistula.

Severity and complications depends upon the nature of lesion, so you should consult any senior ENT doctor for your endoscopic examination of air and food pipes.

I hope your query is answered.

Regards.
