Suggest Ways To Wean Off Pain Medication

I have been on pain meds for a very long time for a pain condition. They are working great. They allow me to work and I have no side effects. My doctor is almost ready to retire . I am worried with everything going on about finding another doctor. I have stopped taking them for a trial period but after a few weeks I am in pain again. My doctor is great and always supportive he feels that I am not an addict but truly need them for pain. But he will not be around forever. What should I do?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello.
Welcome to HCM.
This is Dr. Swarnava Dattagupta answering your query.

See, pain medications are sometimes addictive but mostly they do not cause such problem. And yes, in chronic pain conditions, patients take these medications for a long time. Its good that you have not developed any side effects. You can continue taking it along with some antacids etc. What you can also do is decreasing the dose and getting adjusted to lower dosage. Then the side effects will be minimised.

Hope this was useful.
Regards.
