Suggest Ways To Rule Out Lung Cancer

Hi, Doc. I am concerned about lung cancer. I have so many of the symptons....5 incidents of pneumonia in 1 year, even after a pneumonia shot. The last one was microplasmic double pneumonia and I had to be isolated in the hospital. The ex-ray always shows pneumonia but cancer has never been raised. I also have a bone dry throat, hoarseness for several years and COPD. My father had lung cancer. If an X-ray doesn t show anything, would I still be able to get a bronchioscopy and is that ever the way it is diagnosed.

If you have smoked more than 1 pack per day for last 30 years and are >55 years age then you are eligible for lung cancer screening using low dose CT chest. I would be concerned about lung cancer if you having pneumonia in same lobe of lung every time or if you have symptoms of cancer like weight loss, coughing blood, loss of appetite. You will need CT chest without contrast before bronchoscopy in any case.

Hello

Usually if we have clinical suspicion for lung cancer we order a chest CT and a bronchoscopy. If they come negative than nothing to worry about.
