Hello Doctor, I am from Surat - Gujarat. I am getting married on 7th dec, and me & my partner were thinking of having intercourse without the use of a condom. Can you please guide us with some pills or any other medication through which we can avoid pregnancy and what can be possible side effects..?? Thank You.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern.
It would be advisable to take 'emergency contraceptive pill' or 'morning after pill' when you have unprotected intercourse. They contain 'levonorgestrel'.
It needs to be taken within 72 hours of having unprotected intercourse. Earlier it is taken, the protection seems to be better.
It would protect from pregnancy by causing breakthrough bleeding just like periods within 3 weeks from the day of intake of pills. In case you do not get periods within 3 weeks, you need to seek medical attention immediately.
Since these pills are hormonal preparations, common side effects of such pills include nausea or vomiting, dizziness, tiredness, headache, breast tenderness, bleeding between periods or heavier menstrual bleeding and lower abdominal pain or cramps. However, most of these symptoms subside with the onset of bleeding.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
Best Wishes.
