Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Dear Dhananjay ,
After a dog bite the first step is to wash the wound with soap and water as best possible. This helps killing rabies virus if present at the bite site. Next thing to do is take wound management at hospital that includes cleaning with antiseptic. Third step is to start immunization for rabies which you have started. Immunoglobulins for rabies is very important as they give immediate protection against rabies. The vaccine is definitely effective but body immune system takes few days to respond to vaccine dose. So in order to prevent rabies infection till that time immunoglobulins are prescribed to be taken immediately. Immunoglobulins are ready antibodies against rabies and will kill rabies virus immediately if present. Same immunoglobulins will be produced by the body as a response to vaccine dose after few days and will take care further. Keep the dog under observation if possible. Visit your doctor for further doses of vaccine and follow as prescribed. Rabies is 100 % preventable if appropriate action is taken timely.
