Suggest Treatment For Whooping Cough In An Elderly Person

My husband has a cough and has had for a long time. It s worse in the morning and seems to be more of a dry cough. He wears a C-pap at night. He takes blood pressure medicine and had whooping cough when he was very young. He is 70 now. Could any of these contribute to his cough? What is the most likely?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
Welcome to HCM.

Your husband's main problem is coughing which is going worse throughout the day.

His chronic cough could be due to acute bronchitis, allergic bronchitis or upper respiratory infection etc but can be confirmly commented only after complete clinical examination of respiratory system.

Blood pressure medicines like captopril or enalapril might cause dry cough but first let me know which blood pressure pill he is taking at present.

Also, over use of C-papa might also induce upper respiratory infection (which is know as ventilator associated infection)so both theses possibilities should also be ruled out.

For which.he may need to undergo routine blood investigations with sputum tests and X- ray chest to rule out any other pathology of lung.

Once the diagnosis is confirmed,he will require full course of antibiotics (quinolones or cephalosporins) with antiinflammatory and antiallergic (antihistamines or steroids) with supportive treatment.

Consult pulmonologist for further advise.
