Suggest Treatment For Vomiting, diarrhea And Passing Of Black Stools

I am a 20yo female with a history of chronic stomach issues. I have had a previous diagnosis of celiac disease but with no change with treatment. Recently I was hospitalized because I was unable to go to the bathroom for 3 and had severe weakness and was kept under observation for 5 days. I then went through an outpatient colonoscopy where they found no signs of chrons or U.C. or celiac. However, my symptoms have not improved with medication (anti spasmodic) and over the past week I have had severe vomitting, diareaha, migraine and now I am experiencing black stools. I have hit a road block on where to continue on, not sure if the doctor who said I have nothing wrong but IBS is correct or if something more serious is going on.

Hello,

Surely, this may be due to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) that is irritable bowel syndrome but this can be said to have only if all the investigations are normal which I do not think so as black stools also called as melena indicates something serious which needs a proper evaluation.

Hence, I would advise you the following in such a situation:
- Insist for upper GI Endoscopy
- Camera Endoscopy
- CT scan of the abdomen
- Tests of stool for three consecutive days
- Tests of blood and urine
- Any other investigations as may be asked by a Gastroenterologist

If all the investigations are normal, then this may be an IBS. But, if any positive finding is seen, you will be treated specifically.

Watch for the foods and beverages that instigate or enhance the problems and stop these altogether. Also, remember that control of stress and anxiety is very important.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant
