I ve had a yeast infection for over a week, I went to instacare Saturday were I got fluconazole and took that day. I m slowly getting better but still having discharge that normal, when will that stop? Can I use a tampon to keep the discharge from touching me and making my bottom worse? How much longer before all my symptoms go away and I m better? This is driving me nuts.

Hallow Dear,

Yeast infections are nasty infections; though they can be treated effectively with due care and precautions.

Though these are sexually transmitted infections, unhealthy hygiene and commode users are known to contact it frequently. Loss of normal vaginal flora (due to use of antibiotics, etc.) also causes this infection. Since it gets transmitted sexually, it is imperative that both the sexual partners are treated simultaneously irrespective of the symptoms.

Usually, vaginal yeast (candida) infection can be treated by local antifungal medicines. To regain normal vaginal flora of Lactobacilli, vaginal ovules of these bacteria help speedy recovery. Lactobacilli perineal wash also are useful.

Along with the treatment, following tips will help you speedy recovery and prevention of recurrence:

1. All the instructions to be followed by both the partners.
2. Shave the private parts clean.
3. Boil the underwear daily.
4. Use panty liners to prevent soiling. They are better than tampon. (This is only for female)
5. Clip the nails short.
6. Observe complete sexual abstinence till both of you are declared as completely cured.

Usually the infection gets cured within 2 weeks if care is taken to prevent reinfection.

I hope this helps you.
