Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, usually through ingestion of contaminated food or water. The acute illness is characterized by prolonged fever, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, and constipation or sometimes diarrhoea.
It is most prevalent in areas with poor sanitation, life habits and personel hygeine.
The symptoms of typhoid fever usually develop one or two weeks after a person becomes infected with the Salmonella typhi bacteria. With treatment, the symptoms of typhoid fever should quickly improve within three to five day.
Commonly prescribed antibiotics include:
Ciprofloxacin (Cipro). In the United States, doctors often prescribe this for nonpregnant adults. ...
Azithromycin (Zithromax). This may be used if a person is unable to take ciprofloxacin or the bacteria is resistant to ciprofloxacin. Ceftriaxone.
