Suggest Treatment For Transverse Myelitis

Hi, I have a brother who was diagnosed with transverse myelitis at 14 years and he is now 18. My question is what time period was the best for a fast recovery? He had gained some movements within a month of falling ill but is still bed ridden to date. How would we know if the inflammation has disappeared? Would the inflammation recur again even after taking medication? Is there a possibility that decompression surgery can help him with faster recovery? Is it still possible to recover after 3 years?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

It includes pain killers, antiviral medications, plasma therapy, and intravascular corticosteroids.

Corticosteroids such as methylprednisolone or dexamethasone may be given to help decrease the swelling in the spinal cord.

In some cases, prednisone, taken by mouth, is used for a period of time after the IV therapy is completed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
