Suggest Treatment For Torn Meniscus And Swelling In The Ankles

In December, I fell and tore my meniscus. When I fell, I immediately had pain on knee as well as radiating on the outside of my leg, going down to my ankle and up to mid thigh. I went to the ER and they did xray of my knee but didn t address the ankle. It swelled immediately, looked like it had a donut around it. I had surgery on the knee but nothing was done about my ankle. I had problems with my ankle and my calf, muscle pain, knotting up in calf. Finally, it was found that I had torn ligaments in my ankle. I am currently wearing a brace on my left ankle, but week before last, my right foot and ankle started swelling. I am wondering what could be causing this problem. Is it related?

Hello,

there is no probably no relation to your knee injury. Sometimes when a limb is injured the other limb 'receives' more loads than usual because most patients avoid to use it. Therefore injuries are more likely to occur.

Another thing to consider is thrombosis if your mobility was significantly limited during this time particularly if you also had a predisposition for thrombotic events like a personal or family history of thrombotic events, abortions, etc.

Finally leg swelling may have to do with other disorders like heart failure (you haven't mentioned any medical history, so I can't say if it's possible or not), drugs and renal problems (like proteinuria).

I'll be glad to continue this discussion, if you want to provide more details about your condition.

I hope it helps!
Kind Regards!
