Hi.

Noted your history of tonsillectomy in past, coughing, chest infection, severe throat pain, wants to know whether tonsillitis can occur or not,
The possibilities of throat pain that I can think of are as follows:
Usual cause of throat pain as explained by you with the history of tonsillectomy is granular pharyngitis.
Aphthous or aphthoid ulcers.
If a small part of tonsil if left during tonsillectomy, this part being a lymphoid tissue can grow and cause the problems.
Hence I would advise you the following in such a situation:
Consult an ENT Surgeon for clinical evaluation, ENT Endoscopy to know the cause.
Relevant tests of throat swab, tests of blood.
Prescription based antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, symptomatic and supportive treatment.
Povidone iodine gargles.
Complete the courses till cured well.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, ENT & General Surgeon
