ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hi, There can be multiple reasons for tinnitus and problems with the inner ear or auditory nerve are commonly behind this. The middle ear pathology can also lead to tinnitus but usually the examination findings or findings of pure tone and impedence audiometry help in differentiating the cause whether in middle ear or inner ear. If the problem lies in middle ear, the audiometry will show conductive type of hearing loss while inner ear pathology will give a sensori neural hearing loss. Most of the times the reason lies in inner ear and the various group of drugs which are used are betahistine, B complex, amitriptyline or Ginkobiloba. If the hearing loss is significant and requires a hearing aid, the issue of tinnitus should also be discussed with audiologist and hearing aid can be programmed to neutralize that tinnitus by tinnitus matching. regards
