Suggest Treatment For Thickening Of Endometrium

A friend of mine has thickening in her endometrium. Last year it measured 11mm and now it measures 19mm. The doctor wanted her to have a hysterectomy last Oct. but she did not do it, and now she s scared that it s cancer. Shouldn t they do a biopsy first? or would you recommend her having everything removed? What are the odds that it s cancer? Please help. Worried friend

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
I understand your concern for your friend.
Thickening of endometrium could be due to various reasons like hormonal imbalance, fibroids, inflammatory conditions and cancer.
It would be better to get a biopsy and histopatholgy examination done to know what could be the cause.
Also dilatation and curettage (D & C) procedure can be performed as part of treatment and for diagnosis. The curettage material can be examined histopathologically.
Depending on the report, further course of treatment can be planned.
Hope the information provided would be helpful.
All the best.
