Suggest Treatment For Swollen Sore Jaw

My jaw became swollen as i was having dinner in a restaurant in a matter of a few minutes & stayed swollen & sore for only 2-3 hours. The swelling went down after a few hours but the jaw was mildly sore for a couple of days. The only way to describe the swelling is the size of a med egg. What could be the cause?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern.

As per your query you have mild jaw swelling after eating food is mainly due to salivary gland obstruction as dietary habits typically don't cause your glands to swell. You have been exposed to some sort of virus or bacteria and as these enter the body, lymphatic system responds by producing more white blood cells in the form of lymphocytes which help defend against infection. But if any one of these glands becomes less responsive with a bacterial or viral strain, more and more white blood cells are sent to the infection site and inflammation ensues, causing the gland to visibly swell. Sometimes it could be due to food allergy.

I would suggest you to visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. Warm compressors are effective in reducing size of swelling. Antibiotic course along with drugs such as NSAIDs and Ibuprofen is effective way.

Chew on tar food substances such as lemon and swelling will go away. If size will be less it can be removed by digit pressure and if large and related to any obstruction by stone surgery is required.

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
