Suggest Treatment For Swollen Knees And Numbness Throughout Left Leg

hi, my brother is 59 years old. he has had back injuries and knee injuries as he woks as a builder. he has avoided surgery so far. He has had cortisone shots in the past. He is experiencing swollen knees, numbness throughout his left leg and is losing muscle mass in that leg. when he stands with legs together the size his left leg is smaller and could belong to a different man. what kind of specialist should he visit first?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns. You brother has been having knee problems and now more pain and weakness of the leg. I would recommend that he see an orthopedic surgeon. They will need to decide if the weakness is due to the knee or to a back problem. A good orthopedic surgeon can take care of both problems as long as they have been trained in doing back surgeries. You have the right to ask the doctor if they can do both types of surgeries
