Suggest Treatment For Swollen Eyes And Cough In A Teenager

Hi There, I have a 13 year old son who has never experienced hayfever, we are just starting to experience our spring weather after a very wet winter, there is a lot of pollen around. My son has very sore swollen eyes and a cough, he is also sniffling and is very, very tired (this is somewhat out of charachter) I have given him a hayfever tablet and he says it is helping a little, he is home from school, in bed, I am not sure weather to take him to the doctors or not, the closest doctor to our home is 65 kilometres away however I am more than happy to take him, he does not think it is neccessary, but I would rather be ssafe than sorry, what if it is not just hayfever, what if it is some horrible viral infection or???

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The symptoms of your son seem to be related to allergy.

I recommend using antihistamines daily such as Levocetirizine.

I also recommend using a steroid nasal spray.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Dorina Gurabardhi, General & Family Physician
