My left knee is swollen, very bruised around it (mostly below the kneecap) with a few small red streaks and a lot of tenderness. There is a lump on the outside that is especially tender. I m worried I have a tenden tear, but could it just be a sprain? This occurred when my stupid friend jumped on my back and I did basically a full splits, it is uncomfortable to do most anything

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Your problem can be injury to patella or internal structures in joint like meniscus or ligaments. An examination with an orthopedician followed by a X ray is needed to rule out this. Swelling can be due to synovitis or hemarthrosis. In case of any suspecting meniscus or ligament injury a MRI will be advised to confirm it. All these cases initially is managed by rest, icing the area and elastic bandaging. In case of more swelling aspiration should be done. I usually give NSAIDs like ketorolac for managing pain and inflammation. Hope this may help you. Let me know if you have any further queries.
