Suggest Treatment For Swelling On Leg Caused By Hitting

Hello. I am 50 year old female. Yesterday, I was at the gym working out -on a treadmill. After an hour, I got off the treadmill and walked quickly to get wipes to wipe down the machine. in the path of where I was walking to (at a very fast speed) there was an eliptical machine pushed into the isle and my leg bashed into part of the lower part of the elliptical- so hard it almost made me faint. My leg, approx. 3 inches below the knee, hit the equipment extremely hard on the bone in the front part of my leg. No bleeding occurred. Within minutes swelling occurred- looked like it was getting to the size of an orange. I immediately put an ice pack- on and off for a few hours and took 600 mg. of advil. I felt better today, but when I walked around a lot during the day, my leg started to swell and get very black and blue - a large area going down toward the ankle- and I feel it is swollen in the back part of my leg as well. I iced it again for an hour. Should I have an xray, and is there anything to be concerned about with this kind of bruising? From reading the other posts, it looks like I need to keep a few pillows under my leg when sleeping. Thank you!

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Joint Replacement 's  Response
Hello,
Thanks for your query.
From description it seems to be soft tissue injury .
You need an x-ray to rule out any bony injury.
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.
Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation. Avoid putting weight and rest well.

I do hope that you have found something helpful and I will be glad to answer any further query.
Take care
