Suggest Treatment For Swelling In The Lower Legs And Feet

For three days I ve had swelling in my lower legs and feet. I ve never had swelling before. I have had and continue to have a pulsating sensation in them especially at night along with a lot of cramping in my calves, feet and toes. I eat a healthy diet, am not overweight and never add salt. Also, I only drink water and usually at least 32 ozs a day, usually more.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

Swelling in your lower legs and feet could be due to:
- kidney/liver problems: urine analysis, blood kidney/liver function tests and abdominal ultrasound recommended
- magnesium and calcium/vit.D deficiency can also be another cause: get them checked in the blood together with other electrolytes
- local issues with blood vessels in your lower limbs can also be another cause: Doppler ultrasound and a good physical examination will help to rule them out

Treating the primary cause first will help resolve the swelling (edema) too.

Wish fast recovery.
