Suggest Treatment For Swelling And Tenderness In The Thumb After An Accident

I was cleaning my pool when I slipped. I felt my right thumb bend back. There was no swelling or tenderness for about 5 days. I drove down in altitude and ever since I have a tenderness and swelling, mostly where my thumb reaches my wrist. I am fear full that if I got to a doc I will be put in a cast and at this point that wont work for me.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Swelling could be due to Sprain at the thumb or wrist or ligament injury etc.
I advise you to:
- Analgesics (Acetaminophen) twice & tab. Seropeptidase thrice daily
- Take any antacid along with each dose
- Avoid ibuprofen, aspirin as they might slow down the healing process
- Rest & don't over-strain the affected area
- Ice pack to relieved of pain & swelling
- Check X-ray of wrist joint with hand to rule out fractures if any (if positive findings are there, you need a cast, that only covers your hand)

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Yogapriya Vasudevan, General & Family Physician
