Suggest Treatment For Strep Throat And Ear Infection

Hi! My daughter had a stomach virus that started on December 25...then we took her to the doctor on December 29 because she was still feeling bad. She ended up also getting diagnosed with strep throat and an ear infection and was prescribed Azithromycin, which she has taken for two days. She is still having diarrhea and vomiting. We took her to urgent care last night due to the vomiting and diarrhea. They said to keep giving her the medicine to get rid of the strep and that it didn t appear that she was allergic to the medication because she was vomiting/having diarrhea hours after the dose. We just tried giving her the third dose, and she vomited again after having about half of the dose (200 mg once per day for five days). She basically vomited while receiving a dose....so we don t know what to do - keep giving her the medicine or not. No one can really explain why she keeps vomiting or having diarrhea, although her bowel movements appear to be improving and are not as runny. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Strep throat does need antibiotics to prevent serious complications like Rheumatic fever & carrier state for 2-3 weeks after relief.

Amoxicillin is a broader range antibiotic... & in case she has diarrhea & vomiting she can be given injectable form along with over infusions & antiemetic drug & probably over Metrogyl to control both of her problems... she needs to be hospitalized for this. Please discuss this with her treating doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
