Hi there.

Thanks for your query in HCM. I am Dr.Aliem. I have gone through your post and I understand your concern. I am pleased to answer your query.

Kerosene is a hydrocarbon. The most feared complication following ingestion or inhalation of it is aspiration. i.e entry of it's vapours into the respiratory passages causing respiratory distress/infection etc. This usually happens when kerosene is taken in large quantities and not vomited out immediately/or is inhaled.

In your case, intake of 6-8 teaspoonfuls of kerosene, which is about 30-40 ml, usually does not produce any harm to life. It may result in some gastritis. ie. inflammation of your stomach, which settles with certain medications. This is probably the reason for your stomach pain.

Hence, I suggest you not to panic, but to visit your doctor. For hydrocarbon-type substance ingestion, upper G.I endoscopy is not done, since it increases the risk of aspiration. Your doctor may order an X-ray of your chest to detect pneumonitis if any, and some blood tests for you. As I already said, your stomach pain should settle with PPI type of drugs prescribed by your doctor.

Hope this helps. If you have further queries, feel free to post them. If you are satisfied with this, do give your feed back.

Take care.
Dr.Aliem MD.,
