Suggest Treatment For Steven-johnson Syndrome

My baby boy got Steven-jhonson syndrome last year on 2014 April 18 ( in banglore)and again recurred on 2014 May 16 (in hyderabad) . till now we do not know the reason for it. First time the skin biopsy was done and the doctors predicted that it may be due to omnocortil. But even though we did not give him omnocortil the second time he still suffered the same sjs. Both the time cause is unknown even thoug we were in reputed hospitals. We live in fear every day because of the unknown cause that it may reoccur again. Is there any way to know to cause for SJS. Please help us.

Hello,

I can understand your concern. Stevens Johnson Syndrome is a very rare reaction that can happen usually due to certain medication or due to infection present in the body.

Usual medications that can cause SJS are painkillers or antiinflammatory drugs, gout medication, seizure medication or drugs taken for mental illness. Certain infections such as herpes, pneumonia are more prone to cause this reaction. By avoiding the medications that trier the reaction and getting treatment for infections, if present, associated with the disorder, future episodes can be controlled.

In addition, people with certain gene are more at risk to develop the syndrome. People in India usually run higher risk to develop the syndrome. Little can be done if your son has genetic cause of the reaction.

Unfortunately, no specific treatment is yet available for this syndrome. Thus, only supportive therapy is given when the episode of syndrome comes.

As the reaction is rare, the hospitals you have approached must have managed the patient with diagnosis of more common disorders and as that failed, more uncommon reasons were considered. Thus, hospitals should not be blamed for their approach.

I hope this information helps you. Thank you for choosing HCM. I wish your son feels better soon.

Best,
Dr. Viraj Shah
