Suggest Treatment For Staphylococcus Aureus

Hello, My elderly, frail father-in-law came to stay with us for a month. He had a wound on his foot which needed dressing every third day, which was done by the doctor. My husband helped him with his daily needs like showering, and I washed his laundry including used handkerchiefs, which he needed all the time for a running nose. Anyway, he had a swab done on his foot wound and it came back as positive for golden staph, but only a little bit (whatever on earth that means!) They may have mentioned pre-golden staph, unfortunately the information was fourth-hand to me. My questions are: 1. Is my home now a golden staph home, like some hospitals are golden staph hospitals where they cant get rid of it? 2. We have pets and children, how safe are we from catching it? 3. What extent of cleaning should I do? 4. What other questions should I be asking? Thank you. Trina.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi! Thanks for posting your question on HCM!
I understand your concerns regarding the golden Staphylos isolated.
I really appreciate the way you are looking after your father in law.

You asked some questions pertaining to staphylos.(pre-golden!), the answers are as follows:
1. Staphylos are normally present on the skin and in the nose of all individuals so handkerchiefs must be harboring the organisms
2. Direct contact with the infected person should be avoided,
3. The dressing should be done to prevent the complications like abscess, or spread of infection to adjacent tissues
4. He should be given antibiotics effective against Staphylo like Cloxacillin

If the wound is not getting healed then you must contact your doctor to rule out diabetes, and other causes.

I hope your questions have been answered.

Take care.
