Suggest Treatment For Spreading Bruise On The Thigh

Hi Doctor, my grandfather is 86 years old and a large bruise has unexplainedly appeared on his thigh and it appears to be spreading all the way up his leg and toward his calf. He has not fallen recently and he says he does not feel any pain in the affected area. What could this be? And is it normal?

Hello,

Bruise on the thigh in elderly commonly occurs due to loss of subcutaneous fat that cushions & protects the blood vessels.

Skin retains less moisture, loses its elasticity. Over time the ability of the skin to repair itself diminishes & bruises are slower to heal.

Anemia causes easy bruising, since it is spreading it could be due to clotting disorders, deep vein thrombosis, etc.

Use of certain medicines like aspirin, anticoagulant medications & antiplatelet agents may cause bruises(side effects).

You are suggested to get your grandmother clinically examined, get the required blood & imaging tests done to detect the pathology causing bruises that is spreading.

Her treatment will depend on the pathology detected. Do not stop any medication that she is taking without consultation with the treating doctor.

In the meantime, make sure she is fed well, give her food that is rich in iron, calcium & protein. Help her stay well hydrated.

Let her stay adequate sleep. She can apply ointment or gel Thrombophob on the bruise, it will help to release the blood clots & reduce inflammation. Just apply it gently locally, do not rub or massage.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K
