Suggest Treatment For Spasms In Throat

Hello, I am a 27 year old male. I have had what my doctor suspects to be Gerd, I have had pneumonia earlier this year and have since recovered. At the moment I have come down with a pretty bad cough, and when I go into a coughing fit it is rarely productive, and my throat seems to feel like it spasms for a moment after an intense cough. I have been dealing with the cough since I was 15, and have had many answers but no definitive solution. At one stage the cramping in my throat was that extreme that my GP was to send me to pathology to check my TSH levels. I did not do this as fasting seemed to stimulate my spasms to a point where it was difficult to breathe. After 12 long years of suffering with this I would like a conclusion. I have not really been happy with the Gerd diagnosis, as I have now found that since a change in diet(removing gluten) I have felt somewhat better in my stomach..Although these spasms in my throat are continuing to affect my quality of life. If there is any light to be shed on this matter, or a solution.. I would be interested in thoughts. Thankyou.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
A dietary modification like the one you are following does help in the treatment of GERD, but a related problem called laryngopharyngeal reflux could be the culprit.
Fasting invariably causes worsening of the condition so this is what I'm suspecting but making a diagnosis of the above is not easy and you would have to see both an ENT and gastro- enterologist and probably go on a long- term medication.
Reducing weight, avoiding smoking, alcohol, stress and junk food, exercising in moderation and adopting a semi- reclining position while sleeping could be immensely helpful.
