Suggest Treatment For Soreness In The Head After A Fall

I tripped and fell and I hit my head on the edge of a piece of furniture. I did not pass out but the side of my head swelled up, the swelling has gone down but it is still very sore. I iced it for a while, this happened sunday 4 days ago. Is this normal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Yes this is normal. Soreness will remain for few days and swelling will subside eventually. You can take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) like aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), or naproxen (Aleve) to help ease the discomfort.

However take note of the following danger signs:

1. Loss of consciousness

2. Bleeding from nose

Vomiting if present may indicate internal brain injury which will need a CT scan.

Do let me know if this was helpful and if you want to ask any more related questions.

Regards,
Dr. Akash Kumar
