Suggest Treatment For Sore Throat

Hello, I have been nursing the symptoms of a sore throat for more than a month now, but they are not the typical symptoms. For example, my throat pain started as a feeling of pain when swallowing liquids/saliva, but not solid foods (3 of 10 on pain scale). Then, I spent almost a week with an extremely sore throat, which I was able to feel externally from near the top of my sternum to around my Adam s apple (8 of 10). Now, more than a month later, I still have a small amount of soreness/pain, which is exacerbated if I sneeze. It still hurts to swallow liquids, but now about a 1 of 10 on the pain scale. All of this pain is further down in my throat and not of the itchy/raspy type I am used to with a sore throat. I am a non-smoker and only casual drinker... Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have symptoms of sore throat which seems to be due to infection by strep throat. The infection can be due to bacterial or viral .I would suggest you to

- start with warm saline gargles and betadine gargles 3-4 times a day.
- For pain and swelling you should take ibuprofen or acetaminophen.
- Avoid hot, sharp , spicy food substances , do warm saline rinses , carbonated and cold beverage.

Consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis and rule out condition like strep throat and viral infection . Doctor may order throat swab test along with viral culture test to find out exact cause. Doctor may prescribe antibiotics (penicillin or amoxicillin ) or anti viral drug depending upon the diagnosis along with decongestants and anti inflammatory .

Hope your concern has been resolved.

Best Wishes,
Dr. Harry Maheshwari
