Suggest Treatment For Sneezing Attacks And Runny Nose

I am 64 years old, male. Ever since I moved into Bangalore more than 20 yrs ago, I have been suffering from attacks of hay fever, 2-3 times a month--bouts of sneezing (5-6 at a time), usually in the morning, itchiness in the affected area, acccompanied occasionally by a runny nose. I don't seem to be allergic to certain kinds of food (except red pepper powder), but I do get mild sneezing attacks when exposed to heavy dust.I have tried yoga for years, and am currently on nature cure, gargling with salt water, using steam inhalation, both twice a day; I also practise yoga, e.g. jal neeti (rinsing nostrils with warm salt water) and pranayama (deep breathing exercise). But none of this has helped, and I still get sneezing attacks 2-3 times a month, esp in the morning. I underwent surgery for hernia 3 yrs ago, and the surgeon has advised me to try a long-term cure. I am taking Fluticone Spray now, and I am worried about its possible side effects.

Can you advise me a mode of non-steroid treatment/medication?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain it seems that the symptoms symptoms of severe sneezing, runny nose ,runny eyes, itching seems to be due to ALLERGIC RHINITIS and it can be due to causes like allergic reaction to irritants like pollen, animal danders, dust and mites and at times even certain trees and grasses..

Non steroidal medications will not completely resolve the symptoms as steroids have a high potency and efficacy to relieve the allergy symptoms..
If used within limits it will not cause any severe side effects and you need not to worry about it..

I would suggest you to consult an Allergist and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation and investigations like allergic tests like Patch test, RAST test, food challenge test etc can help in diagnosis and treatment can be done accordingly..
The tests will help in ruling out the exact cause of the allergen and once you know the cause of the allergic reaction you can avid exposure to it to prevent allergy attack..

You can also take anti allergics like Levocetrizine, Allegra etc along with steroid nasal sprays to relieve the symptoms..
Do steam inhalations..
You can also be instilled an Immunotherapy that will help in reducing the severity and frequency of allergic attack..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
