Suggest Treatment For Side Effects Of Colchicine

Concern about the side effects of colchicine. Son was prescribed 2x/day for 3 months for myocarditis. He s only 24. One of the side effects is elimination of sperm. Does that mean during the course of the medication or does it mean it could be permanent? He also has IBS. Another side effect is gastro issues when the med is at toxic levels. I don t know if he ll be able to determine the difference between regular IBS issues and medication toxicity.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
The common side effects of colchicines are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, diarrhea, gastrointestinal hemorrhage, skin rashes, renal and hepatic damage in large doses. Rare side effects are peripheral neuritis, myopathy, alopecia, inhibition of spermatogenesis, bone marrow suppression, thrombocytopenia and aplastic anemia with prolonged use.
These side effects are temporary and reversible on stoppage of colchicines. Effect on sperm is rare and temporary. Gastrointestinal side effects are also temporary
Advice
1.     Take colchicine after meal as suggested by your doctor
2.     Domperidone 10 mg per oral when feeling nausea and vomiting
3.     Avoid alcohol, smoking, spicy food, and non-steroidal pain killer for few days
4.     Contact your doctor if you have blood vomiting or black stool
Thanks
