Suggest Treatment For Shortness Of Breath In A Congestive Heart Failure Patient

85 year old dad with congestive heart failure. cognitive functions ok and lucid. has always been very vital guy. hospitalized for shortness of breath this year. in hospice this week with 24 hour care at assisted living facility. last week wanted to die, but process takes too long so now lives in emotional agony. hospice took him off meds and he s not eating, but is changing his mind about trying to die. looks like depression to me.

The point of hospice is to make the patient as comfortable as possible without using excessive measures to prolong life. What this means is he should be given oxygen if he is feeling short of breath. Some meds can also be used to provide comfort. These might even include water pills to get off excess water that is causing discomfort. Drugs like morphine are often used to help with pain, shortness of breath, and anxiety/depression related to the condition. Certainly depression is likely in your dad given his current status. I would look to his comfort the best way possible with his desires. This could include oxygen and morphine and is acceptable under hospice. He can also change his mind about hospice and ask for more aggressive treatment. Since he is lucid, this would be an important discussion to have with him. Hospice could work with you and him regarding these options. Hope this helps.
