Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In The Jaws

I had sudden onset sharp right jaw pain which disallows my closing my teeth together fully. The first time I bite down on something, the pain is intense but then subsides as I go on eating. It never fully resolves and it bothered me last night. It was of sudden onset yesterday - I have never had anything like it before. I am 77 years old.

Hi..
Thanks for writing to us.

Pain in jaws that is more or less always present and severe on closing the teeth together is pointing towards problem with the functioning of the jaw joint..

Similar type of pain in observed if an individual has damaged cartilage that is present between the two bony parts of the jaw joint due to trauma to atrophy..

It can also be due to dislocation of the jaw joint due to some trauma , habits like teeth grinding, clenching etc..

So my suggestion to you is to consult an Oral Physician or an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a Panoromic x ray [Orthopantomogram or OPG] will be done to check for the jaw joint and teet.

If it is due to dislocated jaw then it has to be manually or surgically repositioned.

If there are other causes then pain relievers and muscle relaxant combinations like Ibuprofen and Chlorzoxasone along with Physiptherapy and mouth guards will be advised.

Hope your query is resolved.
Regards.
