Suggest Treatment For Sharp Pain In The Abdomen And Constipation

i am a healthy 48 yr old female. I experienced a sudden sharp pain in my abdomen about 2 hours ago. The pain was so severe I broke out in a cold sweat, experienced loss of hearing and blurred vision. I remained conscience but the severe pain lasted about 3 minutes. I pain moved into my lower abdomen during this time. We were in the car and I was the passenger, so my husband pulled over to a gas station. I tried to get out of the car with this assistance, but I was still to dizzy. After sitting in the car for several minutes I was able to make it into the restroom and had a bowel movement. I felt better, but still not normal (still had some buzzing in my ears). We continued on our way and stopped about 15 minutes later at another gas station and I again used the restroom and had a bowel movement. I had a bowel movement in the past several days so I was not thinking this had to do with constipation. I rested for the remaining hour of our car ride pretty comfortably. Once we arrived home I tried to walk around and noticed that I still have some discomfort in my lower abdomen, but my vision and hearing are normal. Any idea what could be causing the abdominal pain?

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

This may be related to IBS and chronic constipation (spasms). That is particularly true when you consume foods like nuts or popcorn that would trigger spasms of the bowel. I suggest to run colonoscopy to exclude organic problems first.

With regard to finding blood floating in the toilet after you pass the motion, that would be related to possible:
- fissures due to chronic constipation
- hemorrhoids

In both cases, you need to take measures to reduce constipation that would trigger such problems:
- do more physical activity
- increase water consumption
- take more foods high in fiber content
- fiber supplements can help
- can use laxatives once in a while to improve the symptoms

I hope I have answered you query. If you have any further questions you can contact us in every time. Wish you a good health.

Regards,
Dr. Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
